As of 2004, Nassau County is the richest county per capita in the State of New York and the sixth richest in the nation with a median household income of $78,762.
The county comptroller is Howard Weitzman, a Democrat, the county clerk is Republican Karen Murphy, who is retiring and being replaced by Republican Maureen O'Connell, and the county assessor is Harvey Levinson, another Democrat.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

Hempstead, the county seat of Waller County, is on U.S. Highway 290 at its junction with State highways 6 and 159, fifty miles northwest of Houston.
Hempstead incorporated on November 10, 1858, and its importance as a transportation center increased with construction of the Washington County Railroad from Hempstead to Brenham.
Hempstead's location on the Southern Pacific Railroad and the convergence of state and federal highways helped sustain the town's economy when its population decreased from 2,500 in 1914 to 1,395 in 1959.

Rainy weather apparently never became a consideration for Hempstead County voters as early morning showers greeted the 173 voters who cast ballots in six of the nine Hope precincts in the first hour of voting.
Hempstead County Clerk Velora Bright Haltom said that by mid-afternoon Tuesday ballot supplies were running low in Box 7 (Medical Park Hospital), Shover Springs, and Rocky Mound.
There were no contested local races on the ballot in Hempstead County, and only one contested race in Nevada County, where Clyde Wilcox defeated Johnete Dickerson in the Willisville City Council election by a vote of 32 to 23.

The county covers 514 square miles of land, from the rolling timbered area in the northern part of the county to the coastal prairie in the south, where marsh and bunch grasses grow.
Hempstead, a new town located at the railroad's terminus in the northwestern part of the county, was incorporated in November 1858 and soon became a major trade center for the area, as cotton and other agricultural exports were increasingly shipped down the railroad to the coast.
The county's fl majority population regularly delivered Republican victories in local, state, and national elections during much of the late nineteenth century, but in the 1880s a White Man's Party was organized to reduce fl political participation, and some elections were marked by violence.

County Records: In 1906, Frank Smith reported, "The records of this county are intact except that during the reconstruction period, a few pages of the deed records and of the chancery court records were mutilated, and the taxbooks for the year 1878 are missing.
County Boundary Changes: According to D.Y. Thomas, "In 1816, William and Peter Lovely purchased a tract of land from the Osage Indians, which was included within the western boundary of Arkansas, as laid down in 1824, and was a large part of the county of Lovely, created in 1827.
County Records: In 1906, Gibson Witt reported the county court records complete from July 1845; "tax books for 1845 consist of 10 sheets of fooscap paper sewn together"; the records are complete from county organization to the present.

A state disaster assistance package for Hempstead and Nevada counties for recent severe weather damage is currently being assessed by the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, and a determination is expected this week, according to ADEM and Hempstead and Nevada county officials.

The Port Washington Landfill is in the northwestern portion of Nassau County, New York, in the Town of North Hempstead (Figure 1).
It is on the eastern portion of Manhasset Neck and is bordered to the east by Hempstead Harbor, to the south by the Seaview Industrial Park, to the west by the North Hempstead Country Club and a residential area which is part of the Port Washington community, and to the north by a gravel mine.
A ROD was signed in September 1989 and includes the construction of a permanent landfill cap on the L4 section, extension of the existing gas venting system around the perimeter of the L4 section, up-grading the existing active gas venting system and pumping and treatment of contaminated groundwater.

Located in the southwestern corner of the state, Lafayette County was created in 1827 from Hempstead County and named for the Marquis de Lafayette, a French soldier of the American Revolution.
The first county seat was at Davidsonville, moved to Smithville in 1832, Clover Bend in 1868, and finally Powhatan in 1869 when the railroad arrived.
A temporary county seat was held at the house of Thomas Adams until Yellville was designated as the permanent seat of government.

Despite the extra expenditures involved in these cases, Miller County was able to boast a surplus of county funds at the end of November, 1824; John H. Fowler, Clerk of the Circuit Court, reported the receipts for the past year were $831.72, the expenditures were $593.77, leaving a balance of $237.95.
