On November 25, 1975, under the leadership of Prime Minister Henck Arron, a Creole, Suriname was granted its independence by the Dutch parliament.
Arron was overthrown in February 1980 by a left-wing military coup from which Lieutenant Colonel Désiré (“Dési”) Bouterse emerged as the nation’s leader.
In January 1988 Ramsewak Shankar, former agriculture minister, was elected president by the National Assembly, and Arron became vice-president.

Full independence was achieved in 1975, with Dr Johan Ferrier as president and Henck Arron, leader of the Suriname National Party (NPS), as prime minister.
In 1980 Arron's government was overthrown in an army coup, but President Ferrier refused to recognize the military regime and appointed Dr Henk Chin A Sen, of the Nationalist Republican Party, to head a civilian administration.

In 1980, Arron and his government were ousted in a military coup by strongman Desi Bouterse, who was ordered in November to stand trial in the Netherlands for his part in the torture and murder of 15 government opponents in 1982.
After democratic government was re-installed in 1987, Arron became politically active again, most notably as vice president.

Arron was overthrown in Febuary 1980 by a left-wing military coup from which Lietenant Colonel Deisire (''Desi") Bouterse emerged as the nation's leader.
Bouterse, however, continued to hold the reins of power, and the Shankar government in December 1990.
