The Tennessee General Assembly created Henderson County on November 7, 1821, and named it in honor of Colonel James Henderson, who served under Andrew Jackson and commanded Tennessee troops at the battle of New Orleans.
The Tennessee Highland Ridge enters Henderson County at the Chester County line near Laster, separates the Middlefork and Palestine communities, and follows a northerly pattern west of Lexington across Sand Ridge between Bargerton and Union Cross before entering Carroll County.
The land east of the ridge becomes increasingly hilly toward the Tennessee River and was largely unsuitable for plantation farming.

My Henderson line begins with James Henderson, born ca 1790/1800 in NC somewhere (I suspect Rutherford Co, NC, but can't prove it yet).
Their son Thomas M. Henderson (1834-1909) married Margaret E. Stewart in 1857 Union Co, GA. Their daughter Ibiline Henderson (1863-1934) married Noah Washington Gilbert in 1881 Union Co, GA. They were my Great Great Grandparents.
My main purpose for creating these pages is to publish what I know about my Henderson family, and to attempt to properly identify and document all other Henderson families in the same areas.

The Tennessee River bisects the county from south to north.
The county is bordered on the south by Lauderdale county, Alabama, and Tishomingo county, Mississippi; on the east by Wayne County Tennessee, on the north by Decatur and Henderson counties, and on the west by Chester and McNairy counties, Tennessee.
The county is named for Colonel Joseph Hardin, who blazed a trail through Southwest Tennessee’s thick woodlands in the early 1800s to map 2,000 acres of rich land on the east side of the Tennessee River.

Jeremiah C. Sullivan, with the brigades of Col. Cyrus L. Dunham and Col. John W. Fuller, attempted to cut Forrest off from withdrawing across the Tennessee River.
Dunham refused and was preparing for Forrest’s next onset when Fuller’s Union brigade arrived from the north and surprised the Confederates with an attack on their rear; Confederate security detachments had failed to warn of Fuller’s approach.
The Confederates briefly reversed front, repelled Fuller, then rushed past Dunham’s demoralized force and withdrew south to Lexington and then across the Tennessee River.
