The median income for a household in the county is $36,405, and the median income for a family is $42,400.

Henderson county is named for a county in Kentucky which in turn was named for Colonel Richard Henderson, founder of the "Nation of Transylvania" in 1778 in what is now Kentucky.
The county was established in 1841 and is located in western Illinois on the banks of the Mississippi River.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 8,593, an increase of 497 over the 1990 census.

In 1816, just two years before Illinois became a state, the land between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers was surveyed by the government and given as bounty to soldiers of the regular army who had served in the War of 1812.
S.S. is considered the founder of Oquawka, according to John Allaman of rural Kirkwood, president of the Henderson County Historical Society.
Henderson County Circuit Court Judge Steve Evans of Gladstone also is a member of the historical society and he says people are always surprised at the size of the old church.
