Henderson County is in a transitional region between East and Central Texas.
The second county courthouse, a two-story, wooden, weather-boarded structure with four brick chimneys, was completed in 1860 and sat in the center of the square until it burned in 1885.
The county population declined from 31,822 in 1940 to a low of 21,786 in 1960; it was 58,543 in 1990.

Kaufman County is located in the Trinity River watershed and is drained, in its western half, by the East Fork of the Trinity River and its tributaries, and, in its eastern half, by Cedar Creek and its tributaries, which flow into Cedar Creek Reservoir which is in the southern part of the county.

Brownsboro is at the intersection of Farm roads 607 and 314 and State Highway 31, seventeen miles northeast of Athens in northeast Henderson County.
With the construction of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway through the county in 1880, the town moved to the railroad.

The Opelika Field, in northeastern Henderson County, Texas, was discovered in 1937.^ The principal producing formation is the Rodessa (Lower Cretaceous).^ The accumulation is trapped in a faulted domal anticline; there is minor stratigraphic trapping.^ Gas-recycling operations were begun in 1941.^ The field is operated by the Lone Star Producing Co.
