Ramaala, one of the burgeoning second wave of runners from South Africa, outlegged plenty of his more harried competitors in 2002.
Ramaala moved to Johannesburg when he was 18, just as apartheid was coming to an end in the early 90’s.
Ramaala made his debut at the 1999 Chicago Marathon, but the chilly temperatures caused him to drop out.

Ramaala, who returned yesterday from his stunning New York victory in 2hrs 09min 28sec, said that he is primed for "a few more" great wins in the future.
Ramaala has a message for young runners not to over-race and that they should rather focus on building up speed by racing track before moving onto the longer distances.
Ramaala said he will take a rest, then prepare for the Engen Series on the track where he will hone his speed this summer before building up to the longer distances next year.

The most interestingly priced runner is Hendrick Ramaala, the 28-year-old law graduate from Johannesburg.
While this may not be the best of weeks to quote the betting on a South African, the bookies have responded to Ramaala's credentials by slashing his odds from 25-1 to 8-1.
When Khannouchi set the world record with 2-5.42 in Chicago last October, Ramaala suffered the indignity of dropping out of his first attempt at the distance after only 15 miles because he was cold.

HAVING read your article “Ramaala wins 16km race in Amsterdam” (Herald September 21), I noticed that the finishing times of both Hendrick Ramaala and Bernard Barmasai was 45:59.
Would it not be correct to say that Ramaala and Barmasai shared the spoils if their times were the same?
Judges decide on the winner even though the times may be the same.
