  Hendrik Conscience - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hendrik Conscience (born December 3, 1812 in Antwerp, died September 10, 1883 in Antwerp) was a Flemish writer.
Hendrik had long before this developed an insatiable passion for reading, and revelled all day long among the ancient, torn and dusty tomes which passed through the garret of The Green Corner on their way to destruction.
At the age of seventeen Hendrik left the paternal house in the Kempen region to become a tutor in Antwerp, and to prosecute his studies, which were soon broken in upon by the Revolution of 1830.

In popular usage conscience is generally understood to give intuitively authoritative decisions as regards the moral quality of single actions; this usage implicitly assumes that every action has an objective or intrinsic goodness or badness, which conscience may be said to discern much in the same way as the eye sees or the ear hears.
In either theory, conscience may be understood as the active principle in the soul which, in face of two alternatives, tells a man that he ought to select the one which is in conformity with the morai law.
A Conscience clause is the term given to a special provision often inserted in an English act of parliament to enable persons having religious scruples to absent themselves from certain services, or to abstain from certain duties, otherwise prescribed by the act.

Born in Antwerp to a French father and a Flemish mother, Conscience wrote mainly in Flemish.
Conscience was employed at first as a teacher, but after a short period in the army he entered the literary life of Antwerp, first writing verse and later historical novels, such as “In't wonderjaar” (In the Year of Miracles, 1837), a pastiche of 16th-century life.
Conscience's masterpiece, the national epic “De Leeuw van Vlaanderen” (The Lion of Flanders ; 1838, translated 1853-1857), recounts the victories of the Flemish over the French rulers in their land.

Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883) is a Belgian novelist and short-story writer, renowned for the development of Flemish literature.
In 1830 Hendrik Conscience became a tutor in the Delin School, but when the Belgian struggle of independence against the French began, Conscience resigned his position at the school and became a private in the army.
Conscience’s service in the military, which lasted almost six years, brought him into contact with the peasants of the northern part of Belgium, and gave him an opportunity to study their manners and their customs.
