Hendrik Goltzius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hendrik Goltzius (1558 - January 1, 1617), Dutch painter and engraver, was born at Millebrecht, in the duchy of Julich.
Goltzius ought not to be judged chiefly by the works he valued most, his eccentric imitations of Michelangelo.
Goltzius began painting at the age of forty-two, but none of his works in this branch of art--some of which are in the imperial collection at Vienna--display any special excellences.

 Biography
Goltzius was born in 1558 in Muhlbracht, present-day Bracht-am-Niederrhein.
With the assistance of his many followers, Goltzius throughout the 1590s experienced much success as an engraver and publisher, and his activity with chiaroscuro woodcuts was of consequence as well.
Around the outset of the new century Goltzius created what are perhaps his most extraordinary works of art, his 'Pen-wercken' on large parchments and prepared canvases.

Hendrick Goltzius, the most important Dutch artist of his generation and a founder of the seventeenth-century Haarlem school, was born in Muhlbracht in 1558.
In 1577, Goltzius settled in Haarlem, where he made numerous reproduced engravings for the Antwerp publisher Philip Galle, and by 1582 had established a flourishing atelier in which prints of his own invention were also made and published.
Goltzius was quickly seduced by Spranger's flamboyant mannerist style, and not only made many prints after his works, but also began to incorporate Spranger's elegantly attenuated figures and violent foreshortenings into his own engravings.

The Haarlem artist studied the work of the leading role models Albrecht Dürer and Lucas van Leyden, but was also influenced by the great Italian artists of the time and went on to study Roman antiquity during a stay in Italy in 1591.
Goltzius worked both as a painter and a copper engraver; he founded his own publishing company and experimented with new artistic techniques.
In Goltzius' oeuvre, painting presents itself in a confident manner and his portraits of fellow artists puts them on an equal standing with the humanists and poets.

Hendrik Goltzius successfully taught people through many of his prints, including The Great Hercules and Farnese Hercules, by serving as a memorization tool of the story the image displays.
Goltzius was obviously drawn to the popularity of this antique statue and wanted to share it with people that couldn't go to see it or people who wanted a copy of it to display in their homes.
The missing gestures show that Goltzius was probably drawing this statue to exhibit its popularity more than to retell the story behind the statue as he did in The Great Hercules.

History of Art: The High Renaissance, Mannerism - Hendrik Goltzius
He was an important artist of the transitional period between the late 16th century and the early 17th, when the conception of art in the northern Netherlands was gradually changing.
Goltzius was initially an exponent of Mannerism, with its strong idealization of subject and form.
In 1590 Goltzius travelled to Italy, thereafter abandoning Spranger as a model and developing a late Renaissance style based on a broadly academic and classicizing approach.

Jonas Suyderhoef - Hendrik Goltzius - The Dutch Golden Age
Suyderhoef may have based this portrait of the renowned Haarlem artist Hendrik Goltzius, who had died in 1617, on the artist’s unfinished self-portrait, but it is more likely he followed the posthumous 1617 interpretation of the original self-portrait by Jan Muller (Goltzius’ stepson).
At the top center above the phoenix head—his coat of arms—we read Goltzius’ personal motto: eer boven golt, “honor above gold.” In addition to the usual angelic putti, the roman laurels, and the cornucopia that adorn the portrait, his personal emblem, a winged caduceus flanks his coat of arms at the top of the print.
Finally, the mannerist base of the border with its chimerical grotesque creatures demonstrates a certain artistic playfulness; however, in contrast to the upper part of the border, it also reminds the viewer of the looming infernal threat.

The Davis Museum recently acquired The Life of the Virgin series by the Dutch artist Hendrik Goltzius, six engravings executed in the 1590s by one of the most brilliant and influential artists in the history of printmaking.
Each image is a bravura performance, emblematic of Goltzius’s skills of invention and emulation in particular and of the complexity of Mannerist art in general.
The acquisition of The Life of the Virgin series by Goltzius offered the occasion to highlight aspects of Mannerist art from the Davis Museum’s permanent collections, and to consider the legacy of the contested definitions of Mannerism and maniera within the realm of art history.

Nothing is known for certain concerning the nature of his relationship with Goltzius, but Reznicek has suggested that it may have been similar to the friendship which existed between Durer and Willibald Pirckheimer.
The pictures may have been commissioned by Govertsz's widow, Margareta, or prhaps were given as a gift to her by Goltzius after the death of his friend.
In scale, format and style, the Vulcan is closely related to a pair of diamond-shaped pendants painted by Goltzius in 1616, the 'Job in Distress' (New York, Metropolitan Museum, on loan from Trade Art Investments Inc., New York) and 'Christ in Distress' (Ulzen, St. Marienkirche).

Hendrik Goltzius, who spent most of his career in Haarlem, a city just west of Amsterdam, was by far the most influential Dutch Mannerist printmaker.
During his stay in Italy in 1590-91, Goltzius was particularly impressed by the ancient Roman sculpture he saw there, of which he made many copies.
The Farnese Hercules was discovered in the Baths of Caracalla in Rome in 1540 and was soon installed within the arcade around the courtyard of the Farnese Palace, where Goltzius would have seen it.
