 Hendrik Petrus Berlage
Voor Berlage was bouwkunst geworteld in actuele maatschappelijke en technische ontwikkelingen, kwam schoonheid voort uit eerlijk materiaalgebruik en functionele decoratie en moest er weer verband komen tussen architectuur en de toegepaste kunsten.
In deze kringen, en ook voor Berlage, was het socialisme een belangrijke inspiratiebron.
Berlage vatte zijn eigen praktijk weer op en voerde nog een groot aantal opdrachten uit, waaronder in Amsterdam het Mercatorplein (1924-1927) en de Berlagebrug (1926-1932), in Den Haag een kantoorgebouw voor De Nederlanden van 1845(1920-1927), de Christian Science kerk (1925-1926) en het Gemeentemuseum (1928-1935) en in Usquert het Gemeentehuis (1928-1930).

Vanaf het einde van de 19e eeuw is het rationalisme een belangrijke architectuurstroming; Berlage ontwierp van daaruit de plattegrond van een gebouw, met vlakke bakstenen muren en gebruik van natuursteen ter accentuering van belangrijke punten.
Tot het einde van zijn carrière is deze Amerikaanse invloed in Berlage's werk duidelijk aanwezig.
Berlage's laatste grote werk is het Haags Gemeentemuseum.

Op 21 februari 2006 is het 150 jaar geleden dat Hendrik Petrus Berlage werd geboren, de schepper van de Beurs in Amsterdam, het jachtslot St. Hubertus op de Hoge Veluwe en het Haagse Gemeentemuseum.
Berlages laatste werk is volgens velen ook zijn mooiste.
Berlage werd gevraagd het museum te ontwerpen; hij leverde in februari 1919 zijn eerste schetsen in, voor een gebouw dat in de verste verte niet lijkt op dat wat uiteindelijk gebouwd zou worden.
