Colijn groeide op in een gezin waarin de ouders de gereformeerde religie waren toegedaan en behoorden tot de kerk die was voortgekomen uit de Afscheiding van 1834.
Dat betekende overigens niet dat Colijn wegbleef van het eigenlijke slagveld; hij nam deel aan menige expeditie en ontving daarvoor de eresabel voor betoonde dapperheid, waarna hij in 1901 wegens bijzondere verdiensten tot kapitein werd bevorderd.
Hoewel Colijn altijd trouw is gebleven aan zijn gereformeerde overtuiging, is hij mede door zijn opvoeding in het leger, zijn arbeid in Ned.-Indië en bij het wereldconcern de Shell en zoveel internationale contacten altijd een ruimdenkend politicus geweest, aan wie iedere geborneerdheid vreemd was.

Hendrikus (Hendrik) Colijn (22 June 1869 – 18 September 1944) was a successful Dutch soldier, businessman and politician.
He was born in 1869 in the Haarlemmermeer to Antonie Colijn and Anna Verkuil, who had emigrated to the Haarlemmermeer polder from Heusden en Altena for religious reasons.
Hendrikus Colijn reported this information during a visit by Hendrik in June 1943.

The catholic leader Charles Joseph Maria Ruys de Beerenbrouck of what would be later the Rooms-Katholieke Staatspartij (Roman Catholic States Party, RKSP) becomes prime minister.
In 1925 he is succeeded by Hendrikus Colijn of the ARP, followed by Dirk Jan de Geer of Christelijk-Historische Unie (Christian Historical Union, CHU).
Between 1929 and 1933 Ruys de Beerenbrouck is prime minister again, followed by Colijn between 1933 and 1939.
