LaBelle, the county seat of Hendry county, sits on the quiet shores of the Caloosahatchee River approximately in the middle of several surrounding communities including Alva 15 miles west, Lehigh Acres 20 miles southwest, Felda 20 miles south, Clewiston 20 miles east, and Moore Haven 30 miles northeast.
Alva's Methodist Church is the oldest church in the county, founded in 1886, and Alva has the oldest library in southwest Florida which now also serves as the Alva Historical Museum and is open on Saturdays from 2 to 4 PM.
It is the "third" community of Hendry County along with LaBelle, the county seat, and Clewiston, the largest city in the county.

The major concern of the agricultural industry is that the reservoirs and the ASR Wells have not been proven to be reliable and the loss of the irrigation water supply would be devastating to the agricultural industry that irrigates from the Caloosahatchee River.
About 66 percent of the citrus acreage and 95 percent of the sugarcane industry in Hendry County irrigates from the Caloosahatchee and this portion of those two industries contributes about $368,732,250 to the local economy and pays 26 percent of the county's ad valorem taxes.

The CED developed an economic analysis of irrigated pasture which indicated that the gross income of beef cattle on irrigated pasture could be increased by as much as $37 per acre of improved pasture over non‑irrigated improved pasture ($110 per acre of irrigated improved pasture versus $73 per acre of unirrigated improved pasture).
There were six cattle producers with about 13,000 acres of irrigated improved pasture, and based on the economic date developed by the Hendry County Extension Office, the additional gross income that these cattle producers were enjoying because of pasture irrigation was about $481,000 ($37 per acre multiplied by 13,000 acres).
There were 53 youth from Hendry County that participated in the week long summer camp program.
