Henge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henges are concentrated in southern England although they are also found all over the British Isles and Orkney is sometimes suggested as the original provenance of the monument type.
Henges are usually associated with the Late Neolithic, especially the grooved ware culture, the Peterborough culture and the beaker people.
Henges are present from the extreme north to the extreme south of Britain however and so their latitude could not have been of great importance.

Orkneyjar: The Definition of a Henge
A henge is a roughly circular or oval-shaped flat area enclosed and delimited by a boundary earthwork - usually a ditch with an external bank.
The alignment of henges seen in the position of their entrances is highly variable and may have been as much conditioned by local geography as by any preferred orientation.
Henges are generally classified into four main types according to the number of entrances and ditches they have.

The henges are thought to have been part of a Neolithic and Bronze Age 'ritual landscape' comparable with Salisbury Plain and date from between 3500 and 2500 BC.
The central henge is superimposed upon an earlier cursus which is 1.1km long and 44m wide, while a double pit alignment, known from aerial photography to extend for at least 350m, is located alongside the southern henge.
Their size is almost identical, each possessing a diameter of around 240m, while each henge is defined by a massive ditch and bank, interrupted by a pair of entrances, and an outer ditch which is both irregular and segmentary in outline.

 Henge Review
Henge tiles are square and are either fl or white.
Henge consists of matching pairs of tiles which removes them from the board. This is not as simple as it sounds because the tiles can be matched in more than one configuration.
In that case, the white tile must be matched to its counterpart fl tile on the opposite side of the layout resulting in one fl tile and one white tile being removed as a "pair".

BBC - h2g2 - Thornborough Henge Complex - North Yorkshire, UK
The triple henge complex at Thornborough is a relatively unknown place, yet it comes with a pedigree that invites many superlatives.
The henges are circular ditches - three 'circus rings', each 240m in diameter - with external earth walls that serve to create the UK's largest ritual complex of the period.
This is based on the alignment of the henge entrances, of which there are two for each one: they are on opposite sides of the henges' perimeter, forming an alignment roughly north-south.
