  First World War.com - Who's Who - Henri Gouraud
Henri Joseph Etienne Gouraud (1867-1946) served in active field command positions during World War One, losing an arm at Gallipoli before performing with distinction at the Marne in 1918.
Gouraud was placed in command of 10th Division until, in May 1915, he was charged with command of the French expeditionary force destined for the Dardanelles campaign.
During the course of his Dardanelles service the popular Gouraud broke both legs and lost an arm on 30 June 1915 as the result of fragments from a shell explosion; King George V was sufficiently concerned to despatch a telegram of regret to British regional Commander-in-Chief Sir Ian Hamilton upon hearing the news.

 Computer Graphics : Illumination and Shading : 30 / 32 : Gouraud Shading
The Gouraud Shading method applies the illumination model on a subset of surface points and interpolates the intensity of the remaining points on the surface.
Gouraud shading actually first interpolates between vertices and assigns values along triangle edges, then it interpolates across the scan line based on the interpolated edge crossing values.
The disadvantage to Gouraud is that its overall effect suffers on lower triangle-count models, because with fewer vertices, shading detail (specifically peaks and valleys in the intensity) is lost.

Gouraud shading   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Gouraud shading is a method used in computer graphics to simulate the differing effects of light and colour across the surface of an object.
Gouraud shading is much less processor intensive than Phong shading, but does not calculate all desirable lighting effects as accurately.
However, Gouraud shading is much superior to flat shading which requires significantly less processing than Gouraud, but gives low-polygon models a sharp, facetted look.

Gouraud shading computes the colors at the vertices of polygons, then interpolates the colors across the polygon.
Unlike PhongShading, which computes illumination on the interior of polygons, Gouraud shading can miss subtle details on the interior of large polygons.
Gouraud shading is named after Henri Gouraud (and thus Gouraud should always be capitalized).

For instance, the white shiny spot on the surface of an apple (called a specular highlight) is highly dependent on the normal within that spot.
Using Gouraud shading, the specular highlight will appear mysteriously and grow in intensity as the light moves toward a position of reflexion from the observer across the vertex.
Despite the drawbacks, Gouraud shading is much superior to flat shading which requires significantly less processing than Gouraud, but gives low-polygon models a sharp, faceted look.

First World War.com - Primary Documents - General Gouraud on the Second Battle of the Marne, 16 July 1918
The Second Battle of the Marne - which ran from 15 July to 4 August 1918 - was intended as Germany's final major attempt at breakthrough on the Western Front prior to the arrival of ever-increasing U.S. troops on the battlefield.
Once it became clear that the Germans had not only failed in their aim to win the war in the offensive, but had in fact lost ground, a number of German commanders, including Crown Prince Wilhelm, believed the war was lost.
Reproduced below is French General Henri Gouraud's appeal to his forces at the onset of the battle.

To solve this, a Henri Gouraud in 1971 presented a method for creating the appearance of a curved surface by interpolating the color across the polygons.
One of the most impressive aspects of Gouraud shading is that it hardly takes any more computations than Flat shading, yet provides a dramatic increase in rendering quality.
While Gouraud shading was a great improvement over Flat shading, it still had a few problems as to its realism.

Perhaps the most important breakthrough was Henri Gouraud's development of a simple scheme for continuous shading (Gouraud, 1971).
Unlike polygonal shading, in which an entire polygon (a standard surface representation) was a single level of gray, Gouraud's scheme involved interpolation between points on a surface to describe continuous shading across a single polygon, thus achieving a closer approximation of reality.
The effect made a surface composed of discrete polygons appear to be continuous.

The technique is named after its inventor, Henri Gouraud and was developed 1973.

In this lesson, you will learn how to render objects with smooth shading, a technique that interpolates color across a polygon to make the difference in color more subtle.
Smooth shading in its present form was developed by a man named Henri Gouraud, which is why it is sometimes called Gouraud shading.
The idea is to interpolate between two or more colors, which are specified at the vertices of a polygon, or line, in order to smoothly change between these colors, creating a gradient effect.
