Laborit's early theory, validated twenty years after he came up with it [sound like Gabor?], was that most pathologies arise from situations where our third system, the 'action inhibiting system', is activated for extended periods.
Laborit was induced by his own understanding of the human nervous system, to eschew the hierarchy represented by his own discipline and to pursue his research independently (see appended biography).
Laborit's message is, instead, that if we respond to our feelings (emotions) alone, without the use of our imagination, we can get stuck in the gap between 'fight or flight' and if we can't flee, then we're in for anguish and open to pathology.

He synthesized this compound in 1960 as a possible precursor to the neurotransmitter GABA, and was taken by surprise by its effects.
Laborit continued to work, publish, and use GHB thrice a week until his death in 1995 at the age of 81.
It is telling that Laborit considered GHB one of his two greatest accomplishments, considering that the other was the therapeutic use of chlorpromazine (Thorazine).

 GHB: The First Authentic Antidepressant
Laborit was interested in studying the action of GABA in the nervous system, but GABA was known to be unable to cross the blood-brain barrier.
Laborit hoped that by adding a hydroxyl (OH) group to butyric acid, the resulting molecule-GHB-would be protected from being destroyed by beta-oxidation (the process by which cells ‘burn’ fat), would cross the blood-brain barrier, and then serve as a precursor to GABA once in the brain.
Laborit discovered that in effect, GHB serves as a switching agent to cycle brain/muscle activity from its high-energy output, "yang", daytime activities to a "yin," restorative/recuperative repair and rebuilding (anabolic) phase during night-time sleep.

It was Laborit who ferreted out the unsuspected nerve-center-depressant properties of chlorpromazine, the wonder drug of 1954, which opened up the new field of psychopharmacology (the use of drugs to influence the emotions).
After 21 years of cautious testing Laborit reports that the intravenously administered drug enhances the effect of anesthetics, thus lowering the amount necessary for a patient, and thereby lowering the danger.

 General Information
The French anesthesiologist Henri Laborit was working with the French pharmaceutical firm Rhone Polenc in attempting to discover an intraoperative anesthetic agent that would protect neurosurgical patients from the very severe and occasionally lethal postoperative edema (brain swelling) that hampered brain surgery at that time.
When he gave these neurosurgical patients the antihistaminic compound promethazine, he noticed that while it did nothing to limit the target symptom of edema, it did induce a state of calmness in his patients that persisted for a day or so after surgery.
Psychotic patients also demonstrated the mild sedation observed by Laborit, but an I almost miraculous antipsychotic effect clearly separate from the sedation occurred one to two weeks after beginning therapy.

The theories that behavioural scientist Henri Laborit explains in Mon Oncle d'Amérique (1980) may or may not have anything to do with the lives of the characters in the film, who occasionally appear as caged mice.
Though his first two films gave him the reputation of a weighty auteur, the bulk of his work -- rich with bizarre ruminations and cryptic humour -- suggests Resnais preferred to take the piss.
When asked by American critic Jonathan Rosenbaum whether the theories of Laborit contradicted those of French intellectual Jacques Lacan, the director confessed, "I know nothing about philosophy, science, biology or anything like that....

Shortsighted critics seem to imagine that the fictional material merely illustrates what Laborit says, although Resnais inserts some jokey shots of 'human' mice to demolish any such notions.
His triumph is to create a new kind of fiction: a drama that not only leaves room to think, but opens up fissures that thoughts flood into, some prompted by Laborit, others by personal reflections, yet others by dreams.

He quickly realized that the substance had a distinct array of physiological and psychological actions that was not describable by a simple GABA agonist model.
Gallimberti's study from that year on its uses in treating alcohol withdrawal in humans notes that "GHB's action...seems to be without serious side effects." His almost off-hand reference to the "safety of GHB" shows how well-established this property of the nutrient had become.
