Lemoine invited his guests in and left the room; moments later he reappeared naked, to prove that he was not concealing any diamonds in his clothing.
Lemoine promised to build a factory to duplicate diamonds; actually he just took a picture of an electric plant in southern France and sent it to Sir Julius.
In court, Lemoine continued to claim that his process was genuine but was unable to duplicate it for the judges.

In 1908, however, a Persian jeweler admitted that he had sold Lemoine a supply of small, uncut diamonds from the Jagersfontein mine that exactly matched the description of the diamonds that had supposedly been manufactured in the furnace.
Lemoine was then indicted and brought to trial for defrauding Sir Julius of 64,000 pounds sterling.
Despite his continued protestation that his invention worked, Lemoine was unable to duplicate his experiment for the court, and when his secret formula was unsealed by court order it was no more than a mixture powdered with carbon and sugar.

 Austerlitz and the Great Library
It is rather the claim, put forth by Henri Lemoine a few pages later, that the library now stood on the site of warehouses where goods looted from Jewish homes in Paris were stored, repaired, classified, and displayed by “over five hundred” specialists and artisans brought in from the transit camp at Drancy (288–290; 403–405).
Due to increasing acts of sabotage by the French workers, the camps were fenced off and seven hundred Jews “supplied by the SD” were interned therein, divided into groups of cabinetmakers, furriers, electricians, and so forth, and set to work processing and repairing the incoming goods, which passed them by on a conveyor belt (139).
The left-hand column below gives Henri Lemoine’s account, while the right-hand column matches it with corresponding passages from “Die Türme des Schweigens.” Note that the source for the story of the rosin from confiscated violin cases has not yet been identified.
