Henri Pirenne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henri Pirenne (December 23, 1862, Verviers - October 25, 1935, Uccle) was a leading Belgian historian.
Henri Pirenne first developed the idea for the Pirenne Thesis in a series of papers written from 1922 to 1923, and then spent the rest of his life refining the thesis with supporting evidence.
Pirenne challenged the notion that Germanic barbarians had caused the Roman Empire to end, and he challenged the notion that the end of the Roman Empire should equate with the end of the office of Emperor in Europe, which occurred in 476.

Pirenne was convinced that the ancient world ended and the Middle Ages began not with the Germanic invasions but with the destruction of trade and urban life following the establishment of Muslim control over the Mediterranean Sea.

Henri Pirenne is best known for his provocative argument--known as the "Pirenne thesis" and familiar to all students of medieval Europe--that it was not the invasion of the Germanic tribes that destroyed the civilization of antiquity, but rather the closing of Mediterranean trade by Arab conquest in the seventh century.
In the book Pirenne traces the growth of the medieval city from the tenth century to the twelfth, challenging conventional wisdom by attributing the origins of medieval cities to the revival of trade.
Pirenne was one of the world's leading historians and arguably the most famous Belgium had produced.

Henri Pirenne, who revolutionized the study of medieval beginnings, presents a thorough explanation of his intriguing thesis in this final historical volume.
Several wide sweeping generalizations are made, such as the observation that the Germanic invaders contributed nothing of worth to their new surroundings, but rather came for the social paradise that was the Roman Empire.
For those who do not have any knowledge of Latin or French, the book makes a difficult read, as many of his sources are quoted in their original language, and beginning historians may have trouble with the veritable barrage of unfamiliar names and concepts.
