Originally, it had been De Coubertin's idea to hold the first celebration of the modern Olympics in Paris in 1900, but Vikelas convinced him and the newly created IOC that they should be held in Athens.
Born in Ermoupolis, on Syros, Vikelas represented the Pan-Hellenic Gymnastic Club at the 1894 Paris congress convened by De Coubertin, where the modern Olympic Movement was founded.
As the constitution of the IOC at that time required the IOC president to be from the country which would host the next Games, Vikelas became the IOC's first president.

Latour threatened to exercise his prerogative as IOC President to have the Games canceled and, further, to take the Summer Olympics from Berlin and move them to another country.
Latour demanded all anti-Semitic pamphlets and posters be removed immediately.
Both countries agreed the Chef de Mission would come from the country having the most number of participating athletes, the delegations would compete under a tricolor flag with the Olympic mark in the center rather than national flags and use Ode to Joy from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony instead of national anthems.

Henri de Baillet-Latour suceeded Pierre de Coubertin in September 1925.
De Coubertin had always spoken out against women's participation and, until 1928, women had been ineligible for Olympic track-and-field athletics.
Illness prevented the 65-year-old de Coubertin from attending the Games, the first that he had missed since 1908.

Succeeded by Henri de Baillet-Latour as IOC president, Pierre de Coubertin, by then 65, was too ill to attend a Games that he was perhaps best to stay away from.
De Coubertin had long spoken out against women on the track.
Against his wishes, the IOC had, however, been forced to allow women onto the track after a world women's organisation held its own Games for female athletes in competition to the Games themselves.

That move, pressed by Pierre de Coubertin and Henri de Baillet-Latour, head of the Belgian organising committee, was fundamentally critical to the survival of the Games.
The next stop was Belgium in 1920, and those held responsible for the war were excluded by the IOC, namely the "Central Powers" of Austria, Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey.
In memory of those who had lost their lives in the Great War, doves of peace were released at the opening ceremony for the first time since Athens 1896, a tradition that has been kept up ever since and will continue in Sydney.
