H.R.H. The Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, KG, KT, KP, GCB, GCMG, GCVO, PC (31 March 1900–10 June 1974) was the third son of King George V of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary, the brother of King Edward VIII (later Duke of Windsor) and King George VI, and the uncle of Queen Elizabeth II.
Prince Henry William Frederick Albert was born in 1900 in York Cottage, the residence on the Sandringham estate of the then Duke and Duchess of York, in the last full year in the life of his great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.
In late 1944 The Duke of Gloucester was unexpectedly appointed Governor-General of Australia.

HRH Prince William Henry, Earl of Connaught, 1st Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh (November 14, 1743 - August 25, 1805) was a British prince and military officer, younger brother of King George III.
The Duke was most known for his secret marriage to Maria, Dowager Countess Waldegrave, an illegitimate granddaughter of Sir Robert Walpole.
The Duke was appointed (in an honorary fashion) to colonel of the 13th Regiment of Foot, 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards, and 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, and he became a field marshal on October 12, 1793.

In the army, Gloucester was commissioned a Colonel of the 13th Regiment of Foot on 28th June 1766, of the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards on 6th January 1768, of the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards and Major-General on 30th March 1770, General on 25th May 1772 and, eventually, Field-Marshal in 1793.
In later life, the Duke started an affair with the Duchess's lady of the bedchamber, Lady Almeria Carpenter and, by 1787, the year that the Duke received the degree of LL.D. from the University of Cambridge, the Royal couple decided upon a separation, after a dispute over their daughter's education.
The Duke of Gloucester died on 25th August 1805 and was buried in St. George's Chapel, Windsor.
