The Little Bears (the first American comic with recurring characters), The Yellow Kid (the first color comic, part of the first Sunday comic section in 1897, and the root of the term "yellow journalism"), and Mutt and Jeff was the first daily comic strip, first appearing in 1907.

Webcomics differ from published comic strips, in that anyone can start his own comic strip and publish it on the Web; there is no longer any need to for a creator to meet the approval of a publisher or syndicate.

Confessions of an Aca/Fan: The Official Weblog of Henry Jenkins: Comic Book Foreign Policy? Part One
The most successful comic book franchises have been in more or less continuous publication since the 1930s and 1940s; their protagonists have become both vivid personalities with complex histories and powerful symbols with heavily encrusted meanings.
It seems to be one of the great unwritten rules of comics that superheroes are orphans and that the moment of truth that makes or breaks them is the moment when their innocence is first violated.
If really want to treat these comic themes with the gravity they're demanding, you'd be led to the conclusion that they're not reflecting a serious consideration of the post- 9/11 era, but merely regurgitating half-baked nostrums worthy of a college freshman who just got his first whiff of Michael Moore.

 Comic:Hilarious Henry - CGWiki
Hilarious Henry is a webcomic hosted by Comic Genesis about a furry biped coming to terms with his universe, which isn't too far removed from our own.
Hilarious Henry was created ten to fifteen years ago by Jonathan Hardesty, who had a ton of time on his hands and an itch to draw something extremely cartoonish.
Not too long after, Jonathan discontinued his comic and pursued other trades such as creative writing and filmmaking, always longing to come back to the character that once passed his time as a child.

Henry’s discomfort, or his lack of desire to woo Catherine, stems from the fact that Henry’s manners are immaterial to his chances of success.
Henry’s kind treatment of his future wife and his show of seeking Catherine’s consent to the marriage are undoubtedly meant to reassure Catherine and the audience that he will accept his role as a husband with the same commitment and faith with which he has accepted the role of king.

His greatest work, The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749) (see Tom Jones), which he described as ‘a comic epic poem in prose’, was an early landmark in the development of the English novel, realizing for the first time in English the form's potential for memorable characterization, coherent plotting, and perceptive analysis.

That is, one of the key features of a comic plot is The Happy Ending (a not so distant relative of your deus ex machina).
But I, uhh, think the "machina" you're referring to here is different from the machine that Bergson would be referring to in the phrase "the mechanical encrusted upon the living." He was referring specifically to living beings, us with our girded and hinging pooties, or the robotic-like chihuahua.
I read somewhere, and it strikes me as true, that there are two contrary tendencies in comic plots: one is a movement toward chaos and disorder and the other is toward harmony -- just as there are two sides to laughter: the derision of wit and the warm balm of a friendly chuckle.
