 Isaac Mayer Wise - LoveToKnow 1911
ISAAC MAYER WISE (1819-1900), American Jewish theologian, was born in Bohemia, but his career is associated with the organization of the Jewish reform movement in the United States.
He was opposed to political Zionism, and the Montreal Conference (1897), at his instigation, passed resolutions disapproving of the attempt to establish a Jewish state, and affirming that the Jewish Messianic hope pointed to a great universal brotherhood.
In keeping with this denial of a Jewish nationality, Wise believed in national varieties of Judaism, and strove to harmonize the synagogue with local circumstances and sympathies.

During John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in 1859, Henry Alexander Wise, a Democrat from Accomac County, was governor of the state, while James Buchanan, a Pennsylvanian and graduate of Dickinson College, was president of the United States.
Wise, who favored Buchanan's nomination at the Democratic Convention in 1856, believed in the institution of slavery.

 School and Community History
Wise, a residential and college town, and the county seat of Wise County, takes its name from Henry Alexander Wise, governor of Virginia from 1856-1860.
In the 1920's, Wise County was the first to employ high school principals on a twelve month basis, and was one of the first to place commercial courses in the regular high school curriculum.
Beginning in the early 1940's, Wise County was also the first to own and operate a county-wide vocational school, transporting students to and from the regular high school.
