  Henry B. Walthall: Film Review--The Talkies 1935-1936
The Walthall Factor is a combination of Walthall's time on screen, the treatment of his role (was the character he played worthy of his talents), and--ultimately--whether or not I enjoyed watching him in the role (it is, after all, my website).
Walthall is sheriff Cal Yates who has become a victim of modernization as a young, go-getter has taken over the reigns and Yates is relegated to listening to complaints from old ladies.
Walthall was ill obviously as he reportedly collapsed during the taping of China Clipper and did not live to see the finished product; however, save for being very thin, I think he appears very vibrant in his scenes (of course, who knows what was left on the cutting room floor?).

 ToxicUniverse.com - D.W. Griffith - 1915 - Birth of a Nation Movies Review
D.W. Griffith once said "The task I am trying to achieve is above all to make you see." He certainly works very hard to make sure that the audience understands his viewpoint of the Civil War and Reconstruction, though the film remains one of the most controversial ever created.
In this case, we especially follow Elsie Stoneman, played by the immortal Lillian Gish, and the Southern man who loves her, Ben Cameron (Henry B. Whitehall).
Griffith also experiments with other film devices that remain today: use of small tidbits of humor, symbolism, and juxtaposition to communicate ideas visually.
