  Henry Bell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry Bell (April 7, 1767 - November 14, 1830) achieved fame by having the paddle steamer PS Comet built and in 1812 beginning a passenger steamboat service on the River Clyde in Scotland, between Glasgow and Greenock, the first commercially successful service in Europe.
Henry Bell,1994 In 1811 Bell got John Wood, shipbuilder in Port Glasgow, to agree to build a paddle steamer, and in 1812 the Comet began a passenger steamboat service on the River Clyde between Glasgow, Greenock and Helensburgh.
Bell briefly took the Comet on the Firth of Forth, then had the Comet lengthened and re-engined and from September 1819 ran a service to Oban and Fort William, but in 1820 the Comet was shipwrecked near Oban.

Bell's family experienced the tragic deaths of Bell's oldest and youngest brothers to tuberculosis, and therefore hastily moved to Tutelo Heights near Brantford in Ontario, Canada, in 1870, to escape the fogs of England.
Bell was then working on a spark arrester for the multiple telegraph, and he regulated the resistance between the two wires by dipping their ends into a vessel of water, varying the resistance by adjusting the depths to which the wires were submerged.
Bell returned to America in 1878, and moved to Washington, D.C. He did not take an active part in the telephone business, although he was frequently called upon to testify in lawsuits brought by men claiming they had invented the telephone earlier.

Henry's contributions to the development of the telephone are of minor importance compared to his role in the development of the telegraph and the electric motor.
Henry observed that sixteen levers or keys "like those of a piano" projected sixteen elementary sounds by which "every word in all European languages can be distinctly produced." A seventeenth key opened and closed the equivalent of the glottis, an aperture between the vocal cords.
Henry, who in 1831 had invented a demonstration telegraph while pursuing his electromagnetic investigations, believed that many applications of Faber's machine "could be immagined [sic]" in connection with the telegraph.

Bell was later appointed as Attorney-General in 1918, a position which he held continuously under both Massey and Coates until 1926.
In 1922 Bell was able to fulfill a long-held dream by visiting Europe and representing New Zealand at the allied conferences at Genoa and the Hague and at the assembly of the League of Nations.

In 1873, Philadelphia citizen, Henry Seybert, donated to the City of Philadelphia a new bell and a large clock for tower of Independence Hall.
The bell was cast using a mixture of 80% copper and 20% tin with the addition of one hundred pounds each of four cannons - a British and American cannon from the battle of Saratoga and a Union and Confederate cannon from the battle of Gettysburg.
Upon one side of the of the bell is cast - "Presented to the city of Philadelphia, July 4, 1876, for the belfry of Independence Hall, by a citizen." On the opposite side is the date "1776" and the coat of arms of the United States set in a shield containing 13 stars.
