 Chuck Berry
In 1944, on a joy ride to Kansas City, Berry and two friends were arrested and found guilty of armed robbery; each was sentenced to 10 years in the Intermediate Reformatory for Young Men at Algoa, near Jefferson, Missouri.
A year later, Berry married Themetta Suggs and began a series of jobs: between 1948 and 1955, Berry worked as a janitor at the Fisher Body auto assembly plant, trained to be a hairdresser at the Poro School, freelanced as a photographer, assisted his father as a carpenter, and began his career as a musician.
Berry thought his blues material would be of most interest to Chess, but to his surprise it was the hillbilly "Ida Red" that got Chess' attention.

Henry Berry Lowry was a wanted man. He lay out in the swamps but was arrested (with no warrant) for murder by the Home Guard on December 7, 1865, at his wedding to Rhoda Strong.
Henry Berry Lowry and other band members sent Wishart a letter demanding the release of their wives, or “the bloodiest times will be here than ever was before—the life of every man will be in jeopardy.” The wives were released, and Colonel Wishart and the government began to work out an end to the conflict.

YOUNG HENRY BERRY was born on a farm in the Salem Community near Gadsden, (now in Crockett County) Tennessee, the first son of Reddick Hunter Berry and Catherine A. (Allen) Berry.
His father had been married previously, so Henry had four half-sisters who were much older than himself; the oldest of whom had married his mother’s brother, only three days before he was born.

In 1865, Henry Berry Lowrie, a young Indian boy living in Robeson County, North Carolina, witnessed a horrifying event that changed his life forever—his father Allen and brother William were shot to death by the Confederate Home Guard, accused of stealing food and harboring Yankee prisoners.
Henry Berry, along with his brothers, cousins, and his fl and white neighbors, rose up against the local authorities that ordered the murders and kept the South a place of misery for the poor.
Over the next seven years, he and the Lowrie band, as they came to be called, avenged the murders of Allen and William Lowrie, all the while avoiding capture thanks to their reputations for kindness and generosity to poor people.

Berry has the men talk alot about their pre-service and pre-Korean War militayr experience, which adds alot of color to the book.
Many of the stories get a bit repetitive as the fellas tell their tales of Pusan, Inchon, Chosin, and the subsequent stalemate, but their was enough of a twist to each rendition to keep this readers' interest.
Berry does provide a useful survey of the post WWII political and military situation in the US...attempts to eliminate the Marine Corps, the severe force cuts and poor readiness of key personnel and equipment.
