He was the son of Sir Henry Cary, afterwards 1st Viscount Falkland, a member of an ancient Devonshire family, who was lord deputy of Ireland from 1622 to 1629, and of his wife Elizabeth, was born either in 1609 or 1610, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin.
Falkland fought for the king at the Battle of Edgehill (23 October 1642) and at the siege of Gloucester.
Falkland's ideals and hopes were now destroyed, and he had no definite political convictions such as inspired and strengthened Strafford and John Pym.

Falkland's intellectual pleasures, however, were soon interrupted by war and politics.
Falkland thus became involved directly in the king's policy, though evidently possessing little influence in his counsels.
He was succeeded in the title by his eldest son Lucius, 3rd Viscount Falkland, his male descent becoming extinct in the person of Anthony, 5th viscount, in 1694, when the viscounty passed to Lucius Henry (1687 - 1730), a descendant of the first viscount and his direct descendants.

His mother had embraced the Roman Catholic faith, to which it was now sought to attract Falkland himself, but his studies and reflections led him, under the influence of Chillingworth, to the interpretation of religious problems rather by reason than by tradition or authority.
He was succeeded in the title by his eldest son Lucius, 3rd Viscount Falkland, his male descent becoming extinct in the person of Anthony, 5th viscount, in 1694, when the viscounty passed to Lucius Henry (1687-1730), a descendant of the first viscount, and the present peer is his direct descendant.
Falkland wrote a Discourse of Infallibility, published in 1646 (Thomason Tracts, E 361 [1]), reprinted in 1650, in 1651 (E 634 [1]) ed.

Viscount Falkland   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The title Viscount Falkland was created in 1620 for Sir Henry Cary, in the Peerage of Scotland, along with the subsidiary title of LordCary.
Theoretically, since all Viscounts in the Peerage of Scotland use "of" in their titles, the Viscount should be theViscount of Falkland.
However, most Scottish Viscounts have dropped the practice of using "of." The only ones whopersist in the usage of the word are the Viscount ofArbuthnott, and, to a lesser extent, the Viscount ofOxfuird.

 viscount
The title of a viscount may be either a placename, or a surname, or, as is more often the case, a combinations thereof.
In any event, the style of a viscount is "The Viscount X," or "The Viscount X of Y." Examples include: The Viscount Falmouth (placename); The Viscount Hardinge (surname); The Viscount Gage of Castle Island (surname of placename); and The Viscount Combermere of Bhurtpore (placename of placename).
Normally, The Viscount X is known as Lord X, while his wife is Lady X. (X is only the main title: the Viscount of Arbuthnott would be Lord Arbuthnott; the Viscount Gage of Castle Island would be Lord Gage.) The children of a viscount are known as "The Honourable [Forename] [Surname]".

Cary offered to give up his estate altogether and, when his father contemptuously rejected his offer, went to Holland in the hope of obtaining some military post and of forgetting the quarrel.
Falkland was not a great or original thinker, but he had an earnest and sincere desire to discover truth.
In fact, Falkland's ineffectiveness in action is by no means the least justification for the reverence in which he was generally held.
