Henry Cort saved the day for British iron
Cort was already a gentleman of substance, in 1764 he married Elizabeth Brown in the parish of St Giles in the Fields, Middlesex; at the ceremony both gave their ages as 22 years.
Cort has as you observe been most illiberally treated by the trade: they are ignorant brutes yet they will contrive by some dirty evasion to use his process or such parts as they like, without acknowledging him in it.
Cort died in 1800, still in a state of genteel poverty, having struggled to support a wife and twelve children on his state pension.

Henry Cort - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry Cort (1740 – 1800) was an English ironmaster.
The son of a builder, Cort was born in Lancaster in 1740.
On Adam Jellicoe's death (1789), he was in debt himself, and Cort's debts (guaranteed by his patents) to Jellicoe were called in to settle the estate.

Cort, born in Lancaster, became an arms purchaser for the navy.
By 1784 he was in a position to apply for a patent on his process of puddling and rolling, which allowed bar iron to be produced on a large scale and of a high quality.
But Cort was cheated by his financial backer and, having handed over the rights to his patent as security for the capital, was left bankrupt, to watch the ironmasters of England grow wealthy on his hard work.

Another of Cort's innovations was to design these rollers so that they gave bars of a chosen cross-section (square, circular, etc) - a feature which was applied to steel when it became easier to produce 80 or so years later.
Cort was born near Lancaster; lived in London for 17+ years before moving to Hampshire; is associated with Gosport and Fareham (both have claimed him as their own) as well as Titchfield; left Hampshire after 13+ years, and spent the last 10+ years of his life again in London.
Cort needed the power of the Meon to drive his rollers: such power was not available in Gosport.

Henry also took over the ironworks at Fontley near Titchfield, renting Child's wharf on the North side of The Green in Gosport and another wharf at the head of Fareham Creek to ease the trans- shipment of both raw and finished materials.
The foundry and warehouse were bought by Henry Duncan Preston Cunningham, R.N. of Bury House, the inventor of the self-reefing topsail and various successful military contraptions, a worthy successor to Henry Cort.
Given the importance of Henry Cort's contribution to the iron industry it is surprising that he does not have a high profile in Gosport.

Henry Cort made major improvements to the works, even considering changing the power source from a water wheel to a steam engine, although this did not prove practicable.
He undertook experiments in an attempt to improve the quality of wrought iron, which in England was of poor quality at this time, and to find a way of producing it cheaply.
Soon the navy stipulated that all iron produced for their use had to meet Cort's standards, trials having proved it of superior quality to that available from other sources for the making of such items as anchors, mooring chains and tackle hooks.

There he built up a highly successful practice as a painter of country houses, castles, cathedrals and other views, many of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution between 1790 and 1806.
He invariably painted on mahogany panels, the smooth surface of which was ideally suited to his careful descriptive realism in the Netherlandish tradition; this was, however, often combined with idealized Italianate settings, although with little suggestion of atmosphere.
Examples of de Cort’s painted views of country houses are Castle Howard and the Mausoleum (N. Yorks, Castle Howard), which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1800, and Charlton Park (London, Ranger’s House).
