Henry Cotton feared steel shafts would tame old courses
FIFTY years ago Henry Cotton, who had been weaned on the hickory shaft but whose superbly trained hands had soon adjusted to the different requirements of steel, won the Open for the third and last time.
Cotton had loved the feel of hickory but one of the great snags was that the shafts broke and no one hit more shots in practice than the young Cotton.
In other words, he feared that the steel shaft, together with the latter-day ball, would see the ball being hit so far as to render some of the great old courses obsolete and that such a combination was taking much of the art of the shotmaker away from the game.

Henry Cotton was at his peak in the 1930s and 40s, an inopportune time considering there was little means or incentive to travel to the U.S., and World War II had forced a virtual halt to tournament golf in Great Britain.

Cotton was an independent thinker who defied convention when he said, "Try a swing without forcing the left arm straight; it might suit you to bend it a little." Cotton turned out to be right; no top instructor today insists upon keeping the left arm ramrod-straight during the swing.
