One famous battle was fought on the Salt River, a Kentucky tributary of the Ohio, in 1788.
A flatboat owned by Henry Crist and Solomon Spears was tied up for the night along the shore by a meadow, and tugged gently at its tether in the damp gray of the dawn.
Crist made his way with great difficulty through the forest to safety, carrying the wounded man who died shortly after they reached Salt Licks, near the mouth of the Salt River.
