His son, HENRY DRAPER (1837-1882), graduated at the University of New York in 1858, became professor of natural science there in 186o,,and was professor of physiology (in the medical school) and dean of the faculty in f 8661873.
Henry Drapers most important contributions to science were made in spectroscopy; he ruled~ metal gratings in 1869-1870, made valuable spectrum photographs after 1871, and proved the presence of oxygen in the sun in a monograph of 1877.
The Drapers Gild was one of the numerous subdivisions of the clothing trade, and appeared to have been confined to the retailing of woollen cloths, the linendrapers forming in the i5th century a separate fraternity, which disappeared or was merged in the greater company.

Draper was married in 1867 to Anna Mary Palmer, a wealthy socialite who proved as able a laboratory assistant as she was a hostess.

The Henry Draper Catalogue is an astronomy catalogue with astrometric and spectroscopic data about more than 225,000 stars.
It was compiled by Annie Jump Cannon and her co-workers at Harvard College Observatory under the supervision of Edward C. Pickering, and was named in honour of Henry Draper, whose widow donated the money required to finance it.
Stars in the range 225301-359083 are from the 1949 extension of the catalogue.

Charles L. Bennett, a professor in the Krieger School's Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy, will be awarded the prestigious Henry Draper Medal on May 2 at the National Academy of Sciences' 142nd annual meeting.
The prize was established in 1886 by the wife of Henry Draper, a prominent amateur scientist and early pioneer of astronomical photography.
Henry A. Rowland, Johns Hopkins' first physics professor, received the award in 1890, and Robert W. Wood, a professor of experimental physics, won in 1940.

The son of John William Draper, he trained to be a medical doctor but, because he completed all of his medical courses at New York University by the age of 20, he traveled in Europe for a year until he was old enough to graduate.
By 1873 he had produced a spectrograph that was similar to the visual spectroscope of William Huggins; he clarified the spectral lines by using a slit and incorporating a reference spectra so that elements could be identified more easily.
The Harvard project, named the Henry Draper Catalogue, completed in 1897, resulted in the first comprehensive classification of stars according to their spectra.
