  Sir Henry Edward McCallum, 1899-1901: Government House
McCallum was born on October 28, 1852 in Yeovil, Somersetshire, England.
McCallum succeeded controversial governor Sir Herbert Murray in Newfoundland and set to work refusing Prime Minister Robert Bond's request to dissolve the House of Assembly, with an election scheduled for the fall.
Friction continued between McCallum and the Bond government and he was recalled in 1901.

McCallum's total large individual and PAC contributions in December - $143,363 - were five times higher than any of the previous five months during the reporting period (see chart below).
McCallum received 56 individual contributions of $1,000 or more in December, compared to 120 contributions of $1,000 or more during the entire 1995-98 election period.
The sudden blizzard of cash to McCallum's campaign strongly indicates that powerful special interests are playing catch-up to capture the attention of the new governor, whose previous fund raising paled in comparison to Thompson.

The fort was built in 1879 and designed by Henry Edward McCallum, who was the Colonial Engineer and also architect of the Singapore History Museum on Stamford Road.
One important significance was FTK was the training ground of the Singapore Volunteer Artillery formed in 1888 with (the same) Major H.E. McCallum as its first commanding officer.

There was no hope of preferment until Bond was defeated in 1909 by Sir Edward Patrick Morris*, a former law pupil and another Reid supporter.
The plum was the appointment of this “pleasant if dull old man” (as Winter was known at the Colonial Office) to help prepare and argue the Newfoundland section of the British case at the North Atlantic fisheries arbitration.
