Henry Fancourt White built a country house in Blanco, at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains, in the early days of South Africa's expansion, the days of ox-wagons, pioneers and impassable mountain ranges.
Henry, a wealthy man at the time, suffered a major financial setback in 1860 and died soon after.
The property was subsequently owned by Henri de Maraliac, Robert Drummond and M J Adams, the latter re-naming it Homewood in 1879.

It starts with Henry Fancourt White, an emigrant from Australia, who was commissioned by Sir John Montagu, then colonial secretary to the Cape, to build a road linking the commercial coastal towns of George and Knysna with the outlying agricultural areas of the Karoo.
In 1960 Fancourt was bought by Dr Roland Krynauw, a retired brain surgeon, who restored the home, adding a wing to it and creating the parkland at its entrance.
Fancourt had largely been constructed on R89-million of borrowings provided by the failed investment group and also suffered from a fall in international tourism towards the end of the sanctions era.
