MHS Transactions: Souris River Posts in the Hartney District
Henry, according to his diary, left the North West Company post on the south bank of the Assiniboine, and opposite the Brandon House of that time, on his 1806 trip to the Missouri.6 He had been ferried across the river by the Hudson's Bay Company men.
Henry Youle Hind covered this ground in June 1858 and he too indicated a small winter post in the Souris Sand Hills, and according to his description of his route would appear to be identical with that mentioned in Palliser's report.
Henry Youle Hind saw a Hudson's Bay post in July in Souris sand hills which he says was maintained only in the winters during the absence of the Sioux.

Perhaps the best source for information on who some of these people were and where they lived is found on a map drawn by Lt. Ephraim K Smith in October 1837.
In 1837, Baker's trading post right next to the spring, was the site of what must be considered the first public school in Minnesota's history, since although there was an earlier military school at the fort, it was for the children of the soldiers.
This first public school was started in 1837 by Peter Garrioch, a visitor from the Red River colony, at the suggestion of Martin McLeod, a fur trader who would later introduce the bill in the first territorial legislature of 1849 that started Minnesota's public school system.
