Gilman investigated the organic chemistry of 26 different metals, from aluminium, arsenic, and barium to thallium, uranium, and zinc, and discovered several new types of compounds.

Gilman's endeavors with HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges) created a "proverbial" pipeline of African American chemistry graduates.
Gilman's first African American PhD graduate, Nathanial O. Calloway was a professor in the department of chemistry at Fisk University (Nashville, TN).
Both Gilman and Calloway remained in contact over the years discussing many topics including research, and the correct protocol for submitting a paper to present during the Spring 1939 ACS National Meeting!

He was responsible for establishing and maintaining the military and civilian personnel programs for over 12,000 employees.
Colonel Gilman graduated from the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education.
