They were continuing to wean Henry off his ventilator, but, after some progress and some setbacks, it became clear to the nurses that he doesn't have the strength for that yet; they need to increase his caloric intake, first, to give him the energy to do the work they're asking of him.

What Henry reveals, of course, is not an enigmatic figure of evil, but a petty, utterly selfish man motivated solely by very unromantic greed.
As Burlin indicates, Henry’s comments, which are specific references to the Gordon Riots (100), demonstrate concretely that what appears wildly imaginative and implausible may in fact be reality.
As Henry states, then, maturity, knowledge, and self-awareness can lead toward a balance of reason and imagination with which one may best encounter the world.

Mark Twain and Henry Huttleston Rogers
Unquestionably, Fairhaven's most famous native son is Henry Huttleston Rogers, the Standard-Oil magnate who became one of the most powerful tycoons of his day.
Undoubtedly, Rogers' most famous friend was the great writer, Mark Twain, whom Rogers first met in New York in 1893 at a time when Twain's unfortunate financial ventures had led him to the verge of bankruptcy.
A member of the first graduating class of Fairhaven High School, Rogers, after completing his secondary school studies, worked as a clerk in a grocery store, then as a baggage master for the Old Colony Railroad, and, at the age of 20, left to seek his fortune in the oil fields of Pennsylvania.
