JOSEPH EGGLESTON JOHNSTON (1807-1891), American Confederate general in the Civil War, was born near Farmville, Prince Edward county, Virginia, on the 3rd of February 1807.
His father, Peter Johnston (1763-1841), a Virginian of Scottish descent, served in the War of Independence, and afterwards became a distinguished jurist; his mother was a niece of Patrick Henry.
Later in 1863, when the battle of Chattanooga brought the Federals to the borders of Georgia, Johnston was assigned to command the Army of Tennessee at Dalton, and in the early days of May 1864 the combined armies of the North under Sherman advanced against his lines.

Sir Henry (Harry) Hamilton Johnston, G.C.M.G. 12 June 1858 - 31 August 1927), was a British explorer and administrator, one of the key players in the "Scramble for Africa" that occurred at the end of the 19th century.
In 1889 Johnston was sent to Lisbon to negotiate the Portuguese and British spheres of influence in southeastern Africa, then went to Mozambique as consul.
Harry Johnston was the very model of the multi-talented African explorer; he exhibited paintings, collected flora and fauna (he was instrumental in bringing the okapi to the attention of science), climbed mountains, wrote books, signed treaties, and ruled colonial governments.

Johnston was in the good graces of the all-powerful Rhodes as long as he followed the Rhodes land-grab dictum.
Rhodes never forgave Johnston for failing to carry out his orders, and used his influence with the Colonial office to reduce Johnston's promised pension of 1450 pounds per year (a hefty sum in the early 1900's) to a starvation level 155 pounds per annum.

He wrote more than 60 books on Africa and was awarded a gold medal by the Zoological Society in 1902 and was awarded an honorary doctor of science at Cambridge in the same year.
He also got gold medals from the Royal Geographical Society and the Scottish Geographical Society and medals for his artistic work from the Society of Arts and displayed at the Royal Academy.

The result was that the West Point project was abandoned and Henry was bound as an apprentice to Jarvis for a term of seven years.
When Henry was yet a boy his father died and his mother moved to a small farm near Hempstead, L. The youth for a time attended the Athenian Academy at Rahway, N. J., and had further instruction from private tutors.
