Henry Handel Richardson (Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson), born in 1870 in Melbourne, Victoria, was an Australian author.
Richardson also wrote a single volume of short stories, at least two of which are of lasting value, and a charming autobiography that greatly illuminates the settings of her novels.
Ethel married J G Robertson in 1894 and later moved to London in 1903, where her husband had been appointed to a chair of German at the University of London.

In 1939 Henry Handel Richardson began writing her autobiography to 1903; she died before completing it, and it ends in 1895.

Objecting to the notion that the marks of female authorship are easily detected in literary works, she adopted the pen name of Henry Handel Richardson, which she retained long after her identity was revealed.

He concludes that their relationship was not a physical one, elsewhere noting that Richardson and her husband shared a bedroom in the earlier years of their marriage and were often taken for honeymooners.
To say that, by 1942, "Richardson, failing physically, was hardly an attractive sexual partner", does, however, pass over anything that might have happened between Richardson and Roncoroni in their previous 20 years together, especially after George Robertson's death in 1933.
