He was the son of John Holland, 2nd Duke of Exeter, a grandson of John of Gaunt, and might have had a plausible claim on the throne after the death of Henry VI.
Exeter was for a time Constable of the Tower of London, and afterwards the rack there came to be called "the Duke of Exeter's daughter".
During the brief period of Henry VI's restoration he was able to regain many of his estates and posts.

Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York (21 September 1411 – 30 December 1460) was the son of Richard of Conisburgh, 3rd Earl of Cambridge, a noble who had been executed for treason by King Henry V in 1415, and of Anne de Mortimer, who, like her husband, was a direct descendant of King Edward III.
With King Henry's insanity in 1452, York was made Lord Protector, but had to give up this position with the King's recovery and the birth of an heir, Edward of Westminster, the next year.
The forces loyal to the King were led by the ambitious Edmund Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset, but the Yorkists had the first victory at the First Battle of St Albans on 22 May 1455, at which Somerset was killed.
