Henry Hugh Armstead is best known for his impressive sculpted frieze of historical figures around the podium of the Albert Memorial in London.
Armstead's first exhibition pieces were fashionable silver trophies and presentation plate, such as the highly ornate Outram Shield (1862, V&A Museum).
Armstead was elected a Royal Academician in 1879 yet his later work demonstrates an affinity with a younger generation of sculptors.

In the Outram Shield (London, V&A), Armstead displayed the full gamut of low-relief effects in silver, but its reception at the Royal Academy in 1862 disappointed him, and he turned his attention to monumental sculpture.
Here Armstead’s main contribution was the execution of half of the podium frieze (1863–72), with its portraits of artists, writers and musicians from earliest times to the present.
His church monuments, whether effigies or Renaissance-derived wall tablets, were admired for their naturalism.
