The title Earl of Clarendon was created in 1776 for Thomas Villiers.
Previously, in 1661, the title was created for Edward Hyde, but it became extinct at the death of the fourth Earl, there being no male heirs remaining.

In 1720 he married Catherine, daughter of Henry Hyde, 4th earl of Clarendon; this lady, a famous beauty, although very eccentric, was the friend of many of the wits and writers of her day, notably of Gay, Swift and Walpole.
This William Douglas, who now became the 4th duke of Queensberry, is. best known by his soubriquet of " Old Q." On the turf he was one of the most prominent figures of his time, and his escapades and extravagances were notorious.
From 1766 to 1776 he was vice-admiral of Scotland, and in 1760 he was made a lord of the bedchamber by George III.; but later he was an associate of the prince of Wales, being removed from his office in the royal household in 1789.

Henry was the eldest son of Edward Hyde, the 1st Earl of Clarendon, and his second wife, Frances, the daughter of Sir Thomas Aylesbury.
The Earl was, at the time, sorely troubled by a marriage project of his eldest son, from the difficulty of raising the sums required for a settlement on the encumbered family estates.
His son, Edward (1661-1724), who succeeded as 3rd Earl of Clarendon was, while Lord Cornbury, MP for Wiltshire (1685-95) and for Christchurch (1695-1701); was Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief of New York and New Jersey (1701-8); was made a Privy Councillor on 13th December 1711, and was envoy extraordinary to Hanover in 1714.

These remarkable spice boxes are thought originally to have belonged to the Hon Thomas Villiers, second son of William, 2nd Earl of Jersey, who was created 1st Earl of Clarendon (of the second creation) in June 1776.
He was born on 27 December 1709 and married on 30 March 1752 Charlotte, eldest surviving daughter of William Capel, 3rd Earl of Essex, and his wife, Jane, eldest surviving daughter of Henry Hyde, 4th Earl of Clarendon (of the first creation) and 2nd Earl of Rochester.
He died on 11 December and was buried on 20 December 1786 at Watford, Hertfordshire, and was succeeded by his son, Thomas, as 2nd Earl of Clarendon.

She was educated as a Protestant, and as it was probable that she would succeed to the English throne after the deaths of her uncle, King Charles II, and her father, the choice of a husband for her was a political event of high importance.
