GUISE - LoveToKnow Article on GUISE
HENRY OP LORRAINE, 3rd duke of Guise (1550-1588), born on the 31st of December 1550, was thirteen years old at the time of his fathers death, and grew up under the domination of a passionate desire for revenge.
The partition between the brothers Anthony and Claude was ratified by a further agreement in 1530, reserving the lapsed honors of the kingdoms of Jerusalem, Sicily, Aragon, the duchy of Anjou and the countships of Provence and Maine to the duke of Lorraine.
When in 1584 the death of the duke of Anjou made Henry of Navarre the next heir to the throne, the prospect of a Huguenot dynasty roused the Catholics to forget their differences, and led to the formation of a new league of the Catholic nobles.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Lorraine
Henry I (919-36) was called by one party to its assistance and, after repeated invasions, recovered all of Lorraine for Germany (925).
Besides, the dukes were, as a rule, involved in the quarrels of the German suzerain and also took part in the Crusades ; for piety and devotion to the Church distinguished most of them, in spite of their warlike character.
By the Peace of Westphalia, in 1648, Metz, Toul, and Verdun were formally ceded to France, which had re-occupied the Duchy of Lorraine in 1632, and by the Treaty of 1661 territory was ceded to Louis XIV, which thus secured to him a passage across Lorraine to Alsace.

 Francia Media:  Lorraine & Burgundy
The next significant events are the inheritance of Bar by the Anjou Duke of Lorraine, René I, and then the reversion of the Lands of Anjou to the French Throne in 1481.
Here the family tree for that line is given, which includes all subsequent Dukes of Lorraine, and the Dukes of Guise also, followed by the table for the Dukes of Lorraine.
Lorraine thus became a "duchy." After the death of the last Eastern Carolingian, Louis the Child, in 911, Lorraine became for a while a matter of dispute between Eastern and Western Franks, with the power of local nobility consequently becoming more important.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: House of Guise
The dukes of Guise, however, as descendants of the House of Anjou, had certain pretensions to the Kingdom of Naples, and it was doubtless with the secret intention of defending these claims that François de Lorraine furthered an alliance between Henry II and Pope Paul IV which was menaced by Philip II.
Thus the man who, as the Archbishop of Reims, crowned successively Henry II, Francis II, and Charles IX had a personal policy which was often at variance with that of the court.
This stipulated that, at the death of Henry III, the Cardinal de Bourbon, Archbishop of Rouen (1520-90), the third son of Charles de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme, should be recognized as heir to the crown, "to the exclusion of all French princes of the blood at present heretics and relapsed".

Guise Genealogy

Rene was also the Duke of Lorraine altho the Duke of Lorraine referred to is Rene's Father-in-Law who preceded him.
Altho I wish to remain neutral in this "conflict of credit", it is my humble opinion that, between the two, only Christopher Marlowe could have and would have surely been privey to the knowledge penned in the following discourses of "Henry the Fifth".

Charles of Lorraine, Duke of Mayenne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry IV retired to Dieppe, followed by Mayenne, who joined his forces with those of his cousin Charles, Duke of Aumale, and Charles de Cosse, comte de Brissac, and engaged the royal forces in a succession of fights in the neighbourhood of Arques (September 1589).
He went with Henry of Valois, Duke of Anjou (later Henry III of France), on his election as king of Poland, but soon returned to France to become the energetic supporter and lieutenant of his brother, the 3rd Duke of Guise.
Mayenne was urged to claim the crown for himself, but he was faithful to the official programme of the League and proclaimed Charles, cardinal of Bourbon, at that time a prisoner in the hands of Henry IV, as Charles X of France.

On the marriage of Henry II with the Dauphin Francis, Henry II desired them to assume the titles of king and Queen of England and Ireland, alleging that Elizabeth, daughter of Henry VIII, and Anne Boleyn, was ineligible, having been the child of an illegitimate marriage, also a heretic.
