  Henry VI
Henry VI was great in his conceptions, great also in the energy with which he pursued his aims, clearly conscious of passing failures but never daunted by them.
It provided that Duke Henry should be left undisturbed and should have half of the revenues of Lübeck, while on the other hand Brunswick and Lübeck were henceforth to be open cities and two of the duke's sons were to remain at the king's court as hostages.
Henry pursued this design obstinately, although as he well perceived, it was unfeasible without the co-operation of the pope and of the German princes.

Henry the Lion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry's mother was Gertrud, only daughter of Emperor Lothair II and his wife Richenza of Nordheim, heiress of the Saxon territories of Nordheim and the properties of the Brunones, counts of Brunswick.
In 1168 Henry married Matilda (1156 -1189), the daughter of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine and sister of Richard Lionheart.
Henry long and faithfully supported his older cousin, Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa), in his attempts to solidify his hold on the Imperial Crown and his repeated wars with the cities of Lombardy and the Popes, several times turning the tide of battle in Frederick's favor with his fierce Saxon knights.

Henry must therefore address his remonstrances to him; and he sent over Sir Edward Poynings, to whose services at Sluys the Flemings were much indebted, and Dr. Warham, afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury, to the Low Countries with that object.
Henry might fairly have answered by a declaration of war with Flanders -- a course to which he was naturally averse, and from which he allowed himself to be dissuaded by the Spanish ambassador.
Henry, indeed, seems to have endeavoured to avert it by negotiation, for he had that very month commissioned Bishop Fox and others to treat for the marriage of the Scotch king to his daughter Margaret.

The duke of Austria, moreover, shall not owe any other service to the empire from his duchy, except that, when he is summoned, he shall come to the courts which the emperor shall announce in Bavaria.
Austria had hitherto been simply a margravate and been comprised in the duchy of Bavaria.
After the death of Henry the Proud there had been concessions and reconciliations with regard to Bavaria-but at the end of Conrad's reign the young Henry the Lion still considered himself the heir, while the duchy was actually held by the king's brother Henry of Austria.
