 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Henry VI
Henry VI was great in his conceptions, great also in the energy with which he pursued his aims, clearly conscious of passing failures but never daunted by them.
It provided that Duke Henry should be left undisturbed and should have half of the revenues of Lübeck, while on the other hand Brunswick and Lübeck were henceforth to be open cities and two of the duke's sons were to remain at the king's court as hostages.
Henry pursued this design obstinately, although as he well perceived, it was unfeasible without the co-operation of the pope and of the German princes.

Henri II reigned nominally from 1285 to 1324, but during part of that time he was superseded by one or the other of his brothers.
In Cyprus, they retained their possessions, and after the assassination of Amaury they supported King Henri II on his return to the throne of Cyprus.
Last Years of Henri II On the assassination of Amaury in 1310 Henri II returned to his kingdom and, with the help of the Hospitallers, put down the insurrection of his remaining brother, Guy, the constable of Cyprus.

 CYPRUS
The proportion of Turks to the total population of Cyprus is similar to that of the French Swiss in Switzerland or the Tamils in Sri Lanka and is rather smaller than the Protestant population would be in a united Ireland.
Given the demographic situation in Cyprus this was impractical---short of a really drastic transfer of populations of the kind that had happened between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s and in East and Central Europe at the end of the Second World War.
After Cyprus became independent in August 1960, the period up till 1974 was devoted to attempts to contrive some acceptable method of power-sharing that would not involve such a traumatic upheaval which could in practice only be undertaken by the exercise of physical force by the Turkish army.

Cyprus History: Lusignan Period - The Rule of Henri I
Frederick II, the Holy Roman Emperor, king of Sicily and Jerusalem, and overlord of the Lusignan dynasty, was the son of the Emperor Henry VI from whom Amaury had received the crown of Cyprus.
After he had secured possession of Jerusalem, the emperor returned to Cyprus and there arranged a marriage between the king of Cyprus, still in his minority, and the still younger princess, Alix de Montferrat, daughter of his cousin the Marquis de Montferrat, the head of one of the great Norman families of Italy.
Henri, on death of his mother in 1246, asserted his right to the kingdom of Jerusalem, which was recognized by the Pope.

The Attempt to Reëstablish a Pan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
For as long as I was in Cyprus the UN depended almost wholly on the British intelligence mechanism for the acquisition and processing of raw intelligence and for the formulation of option- papers.
That rejection, and the elimination of a key mediating conduit, was sufficient to condemn Cyprus to outside intervention and division, Greece and Turkey to unnecessary and destructive antagonism and the UN to a long, costly and largely inequitable stay in Cyprus.
My belief was that an independent, unitary Cyprus (with a revised and workable constitution that was acceptable to Ankara and to the Turkish Cypriots and with base facilities leased to NATO), properly safeguarded by the UN against outside interference, would have been a powerful stabilising factor for the eastern Mediterranean and for Greek-Turkish relations.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem
Alix of Champagne, Queen of Cyprus and daughter of King Henry I, claimed the regency on the ground of being Isabella of Brienne's nearest relative; and it was conferred upon her and her second husband Ralph, Count of Soissons, the imperial garrison, besieged in Tyre, being forced to capitulate.
The title of King of Jerusalem continued to be borne in a spirit of rivalry: by the Kings of Cyprus belonging to the House of Lusignan; and by the two Houses of Anjou which claimed to hold their rights from Mary of Antioch.
In 1459 Charlotte, daughter of John III, King of Cyprus, married Louis of Savoy, Count of Geneva, and in 1485 ceded her rights to Jerusalem to her nephew Charles of Savoy; hence, from that time up to 1870, the title of King of Jerusalem was borne by the princes of the House of Savoy.
