John Milton Hancock was born in Emerado, North Dakota, on February 2, 1883, to North Dakota pioneers Henry and Isabel (Irvine) Hancock.
Henry Hancock also was a partner in the local hardware store and a realtor in the township.
In 1945, he was awarded the Henry Laurence Gantt Medal by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for “distinguished achievement in industrial management.” He was also recipient of honorary degrees from Hamilton College, New York (1950), and New York University (1950).
