SIR HENRY MONTGOMERY LAWRENCE (1806-1857), British soldier and statesman in India, brother of the 1st Lord Lawrence (q.v.), was born at Matara, Ceylon, on the 28th of June 1806.
In the first Burmese War Henry Lawrence and his battery formed part of the Chittagong column which General Morrison led over the jungle-covered hills of Arakan, till fever decimated the officers and men, and Lawrence found himself at home again, wasted by a disease which never left him.
As the best man to reconcile the Sikh chiefs to the inevitable, Henry Lawrence was made president of the new board of administration with charge of the political duties, and his brother John was entrusted with the finances.

I am trying to trace what happened to henry lawrence and in particular where he died (somewhere in England) and whether or not there were any offspring from him who may have carried on the family name (Bernstein probably) in England.
henry lawrence probably born about 1870-72, in Melbournejoined the Australian Navy but only lasted about 15 months before deserting and ended up in South Africa working for the mounted police and militia, before receiving a comnmission for the British Army in South Africa.
He reported back that it appears that Henry Lawrence had been working for the British secret service and had probaly been with them from the outset of his first outing to Brazil.
