 Henry Norris Russell
Henry Norris Russell described himself as "a man half of Puritan and half of Lowland Scots stock." His father, Alexander Gatherer Russell, was born in Musquodoboit, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, on 6 October 1845, the son of a minister and a descendant of Elgin weavers.
Henry did recall his father years later as a "successful country pastor," a robust, healthy man. He would note his fondness for music and that he participated in choirs around New York for years, serving as one of the directors of the New York Oratorio Society.
The one exception was Henry's utterance from the dungeons, enacting the role of resolute character in the face of certain death.

 Physics Today February 2001
DeVorkin's Henry Norris Russell: Dean of American Astronomers is a solid, assiduously researched, and thoroughly documented work.
However, as the story of a great scientist, it is painfully slow going and fails to command reader interest by an artful integration of Russell's life and times, or to provide a sense of the thrill of discovery in the most exciting century of astronomy yet.
This, coupled with prose too technical for an all-too-brief glossary to overcome, means that Henry Norris Russell will find few readers among the very kind of lay audience to which its subject reached out over the course of 40-odd years.
