HENRY PELHAM FIENNES PELHAM CLINTON, sth duke of Newcastle (1811-1864), the eldest son of Henry, the 4th duke, vas educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he' graduated in 1832.
As secretary for war he was regarded as being argely responsible for the terrible hardships which befell the British troops in the Crimea in the winter of 1854, and as the result of a vote of censure he left office with his colleagues in anuary 1855.

The Pelhams were essentially middling Sussex gentry, but the Holles marriage brought extensive estates in the midlands and north and eventually made possible a successful request for the dukedom of Newcastle.
The result was complete victory for Pelham, land the establishment of a government so powerful that there was no opposition to speak of in either House of Parliament, a state of affairs which led Horace Walpole to remark that 'A bird might build her nest in the Speaker's chair, or in his peruke.
It was not perhaps surprising that the newspapers dubbed Pelham Henry IX in recognition of his personal primacy in the politics of the day.

After Walpole resigned under pressure from the House of Commons in 1742, Pelham became prime minister and chancellor of the Exchequer in a ministry that included his brother Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle, and John Carteret, a favourite of King George II.
Subsequently, Pelham's only serious political opposition came from Frederick Louis, prince of Wales, who unsuccessfully endeavoured to depict his father, George II, as a captive of the Pelhams.
In 1748 Pelham signed the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which ended the War of the Austrian Succession, which he had seen as a severe financial drain on the country.

Not particularly well known for much of anything, Pelham held several offices in Walpole's cabinet over a period of 21 years, during which time he practiced the art of maintaining the status quo.
After the death of Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1751 Henry Pelham along with his brother, the Duke of Newcastle, were said to have "ruled" the ministry as well as England until Henry died, 6 March 1754.

The Right Honourable Henry Pelham (25 September 1694–6 March1754) was a British Whig statesman, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 14 February 1743 to his death about ten years later.
The following year Carteret was forced out of the ministry and Pelham was regarded as the leading figure, but rank and influence made his brother very powerful in the Cabinet, and, in spite of a genuine attachment, there were occasional disputes between them, which led to difficulties.
Pelham had married in 1726 Lady Catherine Manners, daughter of the John Manners, 2nd Duke of Rutland; and one of his daughters married Henry Clinton who by this marriage subsequently became the 2nd Duke of Newcastle.

He was the son of portrait painter, Peter Pelham and a half brother of John Singleton Copley, whom he assisted with backgrounds and for whom he posed in Copley's painting, "Boy with a Squirrel".
In 1770, Henry Pelham did an engraving of the Boston Massacre, and later it appeared from angry letters of Pelham to Revere that that Paul Revere had c (showing 500 of 933 characters).

Well known as best printed plan of the city of Boston, and its environs, to date, this finely engraved in aquatint and beautifully printed on heavy paper, this copy is one of perhaps six known signed in manuscript format by the author.
The map is taken from an original survey completed by Henry Pelham and includes an engraved “passport” issued to Pelham “to take a plan of the towns of Boston and Charlestown and the rebel works…” The map shows streets, churches, wharves and municipal buildings in Boston.
This is the Boston which Pelham recorded on his large map of 1777.
