Percy House was first thought to have been built in 1598 by Henry Percy, the 9th Earl of Northumberland, as a home for the Percy bailiff.
Cockermouth was brought to the Percy family by Maud, heiress of the Lucies and descendant of Antony de Luci who received Cockermouth as his reward for capturing Sir Andrew de Harcla - Earl of Carlisle in the 14th century.
The Percy family were frequently in trouble with the Tudors because of their Catholic sympathies -The 8th Earl being imprisoned in the Tower for his alleged part in plots supporting Mary Stuart in 1585.

The ist earl of Northumberland, father of the famous Hotspur, Sir Henry Percy (g..), was killed at Bramham Moor in 1408, while in arms against the king, and his title and estates were forfeited.
It was restored in the days of Queen Mary to Thomas Percy (1528-1572), a nephew of the 6th earl, who, being a stanch Roman Catholic, was one of the three earls who took the lead in the celebrated rising of 1572, and was beheaded at York.
Above it stood the Percy crest, a (blue) lion with stiffly extended tail; but the famous badge of the house was the white crescent or half moon" the Half-Moone shining all soe faire " of " the Northern Rising " ballad with a pair of manacles.
