Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave (14 February 1755 – 7 April 1831) was a British politician.
In 1784 Phipps was elected to the House of Commons for Totnes.
In 1793, due to the fact that he was on a mission to the King of Sardinia in Turin, he was near at hand when British forces captured the French port of Toulon, and he briefly took command of the British land forces there, before withdrawing upon the arrival of more senior officers.

He was the son of Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave (1755–1831) and great-grandson of Sir Constantine Henry Phipps (1656–1723).
He had married in 1818 the daughter of Thomas Henry Liddell, 1st Baron Ravensworth, and was succeeded as marquess by his son George.

Henry and Thomas were classmates and, as adults, from 1867 to 1901, Henry and Andrew were business associates and eventually partners.

None of Henry's five children wanted the Phipps house in Great Neck, so, consistent with their interest in public education, and for tax purposes, they donated the mansion and nine acres to the Great Neck Public School District in 1949.
The presence of Henry Phipps can almost be felt in his former mansion especially when viewing the family painting of Henry himself that hangs in what was once the library and is now the Board room at Phipps.

Henry moved from New Brunswick or Nova Scotia to Belmont County, Ohio, probably in the early 1820s, then to nearby Guernsey Co., Ohio in the 1840s; he died 1870 Jefferson Township, Guernsey Co., Ohio, and is buried in the Pleasant Hill United Presbyterian Cemetery in Jefferson Township.

Henry was a clergyman, and named as "Rev. Henry Thurston Thomson" in Keith Hazell's notes, but the illustrated music cover shown here lists him as Henry Thurston Thomson Esq.
Notes: Henry's children with Sarah were born in the "East Indies" giving some clue as to his whereabouts and possible occupation, but I have not yet found substantiation in the Indian records.
Henry was a cricketer and played two matches for Kent in 1876.

While it does not break much new ground, it is well written, sober, fair and often witty and its selection of 74 historical photographs excellent although the book is a bit pricey considering its relatively small size and lack of color photographs.
The base of Fifth Avenue is what is now Washington Square Park had been a cemetery and then part of the Henry Brevoort farm and properties belonging to Robert Richard Randall, "a successful pirate in the Caribbean," who gave it to a charity called Sailors' Snug Harbor.
Henry Brevoort's Dutch ancestors had been in New York since the 1630's and he kept a pet bear chained in his front yard and sold vegetables and rare birds at the corner of Tenth Street and what is now Fifth Avenue.
