Henry Plantagenet, 3rd Earl of Lancaster (1281 – March 25, 1345) was an English nobleman, one of the principals behind the deposition of Edward II.
He was the younger son of Blanche of Artois and Edmund Crouchback, 1st Earl of Lancaster, Earl of Leicester, who was a son of Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence.
But Henry, who had not participated in his brother's rebellion, petitioned for his brother's lands and titles, and on March 29, 1324 he was invested as Earl of Leicester, and a few years later the earldom of Lancaster was also restored to him.

Earl of Leicester - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The title Earl of Leicester (pronounced "Lester") was created in the 12th century in the Peerage of England (now extinct), and is currently a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, created in 1837.
Henry's son Henry of Grosmont left only two daughters, and his estate was divided between them, the eldest daughter Matilda receiving the earldom, which was held by her husband William V of Holland.
However, the Earls of Leicester of Holkham are usually counted among the Earls of Leicester, and as the term "of Holkham" is not needed to make differentiations, it is not often used when speaking of the title.

Henry III was only nine years old at his accession in 1216, declaring himself of age in 1227.
Henry renounced these and the second Barons' War broke out in 1264, during which he was captured with his eldest son Edward at the battle of Lewes by Simon de Montfort, who ruled briefly until he died at Evesham in August 1265.
After that Henry played little part in government and was succeeded by his son King Edward I in 1272.

 PLANTAGENET
Notes: She was designated Henry's heir, and on his death, Stephen siezed the throne and Matilda invaded England in 1139, inuagurating a period of inconclusive civil war.
King Henry III and Prince Edward were captured by the forces of Simon De Montfort, Earl of Leicester, who was, for all practical purposes, the ruler of England.
He was one of the magnates who urged Henry III to adopt the sweeping measure of confiscation (against those barons who had supported Montfort) determined on in the parliament of Winchester, being moved, it was believed, by the desire of enriching himself.

Britannia Biographies: Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester
Leicester, as prime favourite, was the incessant bugbear and terror of Cecil and the old Catholic nobles.
Leicester certainly knew of the conspiracy of the Northern Earls in 1569 and may, perhaps, have been thinking of providing for his own safety in the event of its success; but, upon its failure, he had no difficulty in proving to Cecil that he had betrayed the conspirators.
He was recalled in November 1587, but his failure did not prevent the Queen from entrusting him with the command of her troops at Tilbury in August 1588, when the defeat of the Spanish Armada was yet hardly known.
