Sir Henry Raeburn - LoveToKnow 1911
SIR HENRY RAEBURN (1756-1823), Scottish portraitpainter, was born at Stockbridge, a suburb of Edinburgh, on the 4th of March 1756, the son of a manufacturer of the city.
Raeburn received considerable assistance from Martin, and was especially aided by the loan of portraits to copy.
Raeburn spent his life in Edinburgh, rarely visiting the metropolis, and then only for brief periods, thus preserving his own sturdy individuality, if he missed the opportunity of engrafting on it some of the fuller refinement and delicacy of the London portraitists.

 Sir Henry Raeburn - 1756-1823
Raeburn was rather surprised to receive intimation that the king intended to knight him, "as a mark of his approbation of your distinguished merit as a painter." On the following day he went to Hopetoun House, and had there conferred upon him the rank of knighthood.
Raeburn was then in his sixty-eighth year, but he had lived carefully and temperately, and was a young man for his years, to all appearance blessed with a good constitution, and possessing abounding health and vigor.
Sir Henry died on July 8, 1823, and conventional expressions of regret were made by Lawrence and Wilkie for the Royal Academy, and at a meeting of the Edinburgh Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts in Scotland.

The circumstances of young Raeburn rendering it necessary that he should, as early as possible, be enabled to provide for his own support, he was at the age of fifteen, apprenticed to a goldsmith, who kept his shop in a dark alley, leading between the Parliament Square and the front of the Old Tolbooth.
Raeburn at once assumed that pre-eminent rank in his profession, which, notwithstanding the multitude of rivals who afterwards rose around him, he bore to the day of his death.
By his lady, who survived him ten years, Sir Henry had two sons; Peter, a youth of great promise, who died at nineteen; and Henry, who, with his wife and family, lived under the same roof with his father during the whole of their joint lives, and was his most familiar friend and companion.
