In early 1916 a promoter from Chicago, Illinois aproached clarinetist Alcide Nunez and drummer Johnny Stein about bringing a New Orleans style band to Chicago, where a similar band led by trombonist Tom Brown was already enjoying success.
Trombonist Edwards was drafted in 1918 and replaced with Emile Christian, and pianist Ragas died in the Spanish Flu Pandemic the following year, to be replaced by J.

As the New Orleans revival of the 1940’s came to a head, Bocage recorded with some of the old-time New Orleans musicians as the Jazz Pioneers as well as playing with Henry Allen Sr.’s brass band in Algiers.
Throughout 50’s and 60’s Bocage led various incarnations of the Creole Serenaders, and released an album on Riverside 60's for Riverside called: 'Loves-Jiles Ragtime Orchestra/Creole Serenaders' and was becoming an important part in the early Preservation Hall until his death in 1967 at the age of 80.

In early 1916 he was part of a New Orleans band which was heard by a Chicago promoter, who offered them a job up north.
In March 1916 Nunez went up to Chicago with a band led by drummer Johnny Stein, along with cornetist Nick LaRocca, trombonist Eddie Edwards, and pianist Henry Ragas.
Soon after arriving the band bolted from the leadership of Stein, and renamed themselves "The Original Dixeland Jass Band".

Unfortunately Fricke decided to go for a "modern" sound, hence these albums are full of overbearing trance and dance styled drum loops, ethnic samples and bland synthesizer textures.
This was my experience with Magma, Henry Cow and Univers Zero, three bands that I appreciate quite a bit now.

Tiger Rag was little more than themes that LaRocca and Shields, with help from pianist Henry Ragas, assembled from known French quadrilles that were popular in New Orleans.
It was the style of playing that set it apart from other music of the time, and made LaRocca and Shields so successful.
